The Atlas Digibus arrived in Cape Town in September and the Atlas Foundation handed over the keys to VUSA at a special ceremony hosted in Langa.
The bus is currently being registered and road-worthied (a slower process due to COVID) and whilst this is happening we have planned the programmes, secured partnerships with schools, sourced online learning platforms, and employed staff.
We have met with the Principals and HODs for the 5 primary schools in Langa, (Mokone, Siyabulela. Thembani, Moshesh and Zimasa) to work out timetables and programmes. This programme will be working with ALL the Grade 4 learners at each of these schools to assist with the transition from mother tongue learning to English. This is where many children fall behind as they don't understand ther new language of instruction.
We have purchased the CAMI English and Maths programmes to be utilised for the Grade 4 ESL programme and the after-school programme. This programme allows learners to progress at their own pace and follows the CAPS curriculum.
We have employed a full-time ESL teacher and an assistant and are fortunate to have partnered with Coronoation Fund Managers (the main funders of the ESL programme) who have generously offered 2 additional teacher interns to be present on the bus each day. We have also employed a driver and will partner with Langa Patrol, a Non-profit security organisaiton who operate in the Langa community to ensure the bus remains secure at all times. The bus also has security cameras onboard and can be monitored 24 hours a day.
The programme will launch early next year and we will keep you updated on the progress. please follow our social media platforms as we will provide regular update on these platfors as well. (@VusaAcademy -Facebook, Instagramme and Twitter)
In the interim, please see the links below to view a video of the handover. Please also see VUSA's 2021 Annual Status Report.
We thank you again for your support.
