For most farmers in the Yangambi landscape, the month of June generally marks the end of the planting season but also the beginning of preparations for the next.

During this planting break, our teams have rolled out an environmental education initiative which has been buttressed by several activities such as the establishment of school gardens in 4 schools in the Yaingongo community forest, a training on bush fire management and the creation of a school library in Boboto.

These ongoing efforts of sensitization, concertation and training of institutions and populations effected by our activities are the primary factors for collaboration and experience sharing between the communities and our field teams in a process which we like to call ‘learning by doing’.

Through awareness raising on the importance of tree planting, communities develop a sense of ownership of activities which favors greater participation, better harvests and an interest in developing skills for profit-making from their own activities.

With the last harvest, the skills acquired during a training given to some women’s associations on transformation of cassava into flour prompted the installation of 2 units of high quality cassava flour transformation as well as 2 units of corn transformation into flour in 2 pilot farms in Yanonge and Yangambi. Flour production has begun with the sale of the first 2300kg supported by progressively revised strategies targeting the Kisangani market.

We look forward to the upcoming season as we hope that your continuous donations will help plant even more trees in the Yangambi landscape!
