GlobalGiving Report Summary: Military Mile Training Outcomes – Latest Cohort Project Overview
The Military Mile training continues to enhance emotional literacy, communication skills, and mental health awareness among military community members. This cohort focused on building foundational competencies such as recognizing emotional distress, having open conversations about mental health, and increasing readiness to support peers.
Key Outcomes: Greater Comfort in Mental Health Discussions
Participants demonstrated measurable growth in their comfort and confidence in initiating mental health conversations with peers. Notably:
Comfort discussing mental health with peers increased by 21%, indicating growing openness within the cohort.
Confidence in active listening rose slightly by 1.3%, suggesting a strong starting baseline with room for continued practice.
Comfort asking open-ended questions improved by 9.4%, reinforcing the importance of deeper, meaningful conversations.
Improved Understanding of the Five Signs
A central objective of the training is to help participants recognize emotional suffering using Give an Hour’s Five Signs framework. The cohort achieved a 28% increase in overall familiarity with these signs, with the most substantial progress in recognizing often-missed indicators:
Hopelessness / Feeling Overwhelmed: +46%
Neglect of Self-Care / Risky Behavior: +30%
Withdrawal or Isolation: +23%
Personality Changes: +10%
Mood Changes (anger, anxiety, agitation): No measurable change
These improvements signal a growing ability to recognize early warning signs that could otherwise go unnoticed.
Commitment to Action
Encouragingly, 64% of participants reported plans to actively apply their learning by:
Checking in on others regularly
Starting conversations about mental health in daily life
Sharing tools with friends, family, and supervisees
This underscores the real-world value of the training and its ripple effect beyond the cohort.

Expand group-based exercises that simulate real-world situations to build confidence through practice.
Explore annual or biannual training refreshers to reinforce learning and build community cohesion.
