Challenge

In rural Uganda, over 80% of the population lives without access to formal financial services, and fewer than 5% of rural households can get credit. Women face even greater barriers: no collateral, limited financial literacy, and exclusion from banks. Many rely on subsistence farming, leaving them vulnerable to economic shocks. Without loans or business skills, women cannot expand income-generating activities, pay school fees, or meet basic health needs.

Solution

This project leverages Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) to deliver financial inclusion and empowerment. 300 women will receive microloans (average $100 per woman), entrepreneurship and financial literacy training, and leadership development. 15 VSLA groups will be strengthened with monthly mentorship and monitoring. Women gain skills to start or grow small businesses, save collectively, and support one another.

Long-Term Impact

This project will empower 300 women to run sustainable small businesses, increase income by 50%+ allowing them to rise out of poverty, be able to school fees and healthcare access, reduce school dropout rates among children of participants, women take leadership roles in VSLAs. Participants will be economically independent, socially empowered, and better equipped to support their families and communities, strengthening gender equality and resilience in Tororo.
