Microcredit Marvels: Empowering Women in Ethiopia

By Riste Zenebe | Finance Manager

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

Warm greetings from Face Up Generation Aid Organization (FUGAO).

We are pleased to share our latest progress report for the project, “Microcredit Marvels: Empowering Women in Ethiopia (#73143)”. This initiative is committed to uplifting economically vulnerable women by providing access to microfinance, entrepreneurship training, and sustainable livelihood opportunities.

At a time when many women face financial exclusion, unemployment, and limited access to capital, this project is helping transform lives by enabling women to become self-reliant, confident, and active contributors to their families and communities.

Project Overview

Over the past quarter, our focus has been on expanding financial access, strengthening business skills, and supporting women-led income-generating activities.

Our mission is clear:
to empower women economically, reduce poverty, and promote dignity through financial independence and entrepreneurship.

Progress So Far (December 2025 – February 2026)

The project has been implemented in Addis Ababa and surrounding communities, reaching:

  • Low-income women and single mothers
  • Women-led households
  • Youth women entrepreneurs
  • Informal sector workers

Through microcredit support, training, and mentorship, we are building pathways toward economic resilience.

  • Encouraged savings culture and reinvestment

Early Impact & Stories of Change

From Dependency to Independence – Addis Ababa
Mekdes, a single mother of two, received a small loan to start a food vending business. Within two months, she began earning stable income and is now able to support her children’s education. She shared:
"For the first time, I feel in control of my future."

Growing Confidence – Women Entrepreneurs
Women who once doubted their abilities are now confidently managing small businesses and participating in local markets.

Stronger Households – Community Impact
Families supported by women beneficiaries report improved living conditions, better nutrition, and increased school attendance for children.

Challenges Encountered

During implementation, we faced several challenges:

  • Rising cost of goods affecting business profitability
  • Limited initial business experience among participants
  • Economic instability impacting repayment cycles
  • High demand for loans exceeding available resources

Despite these challenges, strong mentorship and group support systems have helped maintain progress.

What’s Next? (March – May 2026)

In the coming months, FUGAO plans to:

  • Provide microloans to 150 additional women
  • Expand savings and lending groups to new communities
  • Deliver advanced entrepreneurship training
  • Strengthen market linkages for women-led businesses
  • Introduce digital financial literacy tools
  • Support business scaling for successful participants

Sustainability & Long-Term Vision

This project promotes long-term impact by:

  • Encouraging savings and reinvestment
  • Building strong women-led financial groups
  • Strengthening local economic ecosystems
  • Promoting peer mentorship and accountability
  • Supporting business continuity and growth

By 2030, FUGAO aims to empower thousands of women across Ethiopia with sustainable livelihoods.

Why This Project Matters

When women are economically empowered, entire communities benefit.

This project provides:

  • Opportunity where poverty once dominated
  • Income where unemployment prevailed
  • Confidence where doubt existed
  • Dignity through self-reliance

Every contribution makes a difference:

  • $25 supports basic business training for one woman
  • $75 contributes to a small startup loan
  • $150 helps expand a woman’s business
  • $500 supports a group of women entrepreneurs
  • $5,000 scales microcredit programs across communities

Monitoring & Evaluation

To ensure transparency and impact, we use:

  • Loan tracking and repayment monitoring
  • Business performance assessments
  • Training attendance records
  • Beneficiary feedback surveys
  • Regular field visits and follow-ups

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

  • 120 women received microloans
  • 150 women trained in entrepreneurship
  • 70 women linked to markets
  • 5 savings and lending groups established
  • Increased income levels among beneficiaries
