While our annual Celebrity Soccer Challenge only happens once a year, your support of our project helps us support patients and families in need throughout the year. The Mia Hamm Foundation has granted $150,000 to the Division of Bone Marrow Transplant/Reseach Immunology at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. They are dedicated to the principles of family-centered care and treating the whole child, beyond their medical conditions, which includes their psychological development and emotional well-being. The funds gifted by the Mia Hamm Foundation have allowed them to provide an art therapist, who works with patients to help them express their feelings about their disease, express how they feel, and convey their hopes and dreams for the future. They have also purchased several Nintendo Wii's so that their patients can enjoy some fun and physical activity while they are confined to their isolation rooms.
In addition, the Mia Hamm Foundation gifts will be used to equip rooms for the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit in their new hospital building which is currently being built and will open in 2011. The BMT Unit will grow to 10,900 square feet in the new hospital with an increase to 14 beds from their current 11 beds. It will be a world-class resource offering hope and healing to help sick children live happy and healthy lives.
