ICF's Commitment to Disaster Relief

By Cynthia Aime Duran | Marketing & Communications Manager

We have now reached the ninth anniversary of the devastating 8.2-magnitude earthquake that struck several regions of Mexico. The destruction left a lasting impact, both physically and emotionally, especially in Oaxaca's Istmo communities. In response, the International Community Foundation (ICF) initiated a multi-stage disaster relief strategy to address immediate and long-term recovery needs.

During the initial two stages, ICF focused on providing immediate emergency relief to stabilize affected areas. In the third stage, the organization shifted its focus to supporting long-term projects designed to foster sustainable recovery and resilience within impacted communities. In this critical stage, ICF collaborated with eleven local community organizations across Oaxaca, Morelos, and Mexico City to assess community needs and provide philanthropic support to address them. The grantee organizations included:

  • Friends of El Peñón
  • Fundación Cántaro Azul, A.C.
  • Fundación Comunidad, A.C.
  • Fundación Comunitaria Malinalco
  • Fondo Unido, I.A.P.
  • Pro Ayuda a la Mujer Origen, A.C.
  • Proyecto Impacto Consultores, A.C.
  • Crecemos - Desarrollo Integral de la Juventud Oaxaca
  • Fundación Comunitaria Oaxaca, A.C.
  • Centro de Apoyo Para la Educación y Creatividad
  • Manos que Reconstruyen Oaxaca, A.C.

These partnerships facilitated a range of impactful projects, including the development of vital emergency kits and the provision of therapeutic outlets to help communities process their trauma. These efforts played a significant role in stabilizing and rebuilding the most heavily affected areas.

ICF's disaster relief efforts focused on two primary objectives:

  • Developing capacities in affected communities to promote economic reactivation and sustainable development, including disaster preparedness.
  • Informing and advocating for communities to ensure their active participation in decision-making regarding reconstruction policies and efforts that impact them.

As natural disasters such as hurricanes, earthquakes, and severe storms continue to impact communities across Mexico each year, the need for timely, compassionate, and locally driven disaster relief remains greater than ever. At ICF, we believe that communities are strongest when they are empowered to lead their own recovery. That is why we are committed to equipping local foundations and community partners with the resources, connections, and support they need to rebuild, recover, and create stronger, more resilient regions.

Through the years of collaboration with trusted partner organizations, ICF has developed a deep understanding of the unique challenges communities face in the aftermath of a disaster. Our local partnerships allow us to listen closely, identify the most pressing needs, and help direct resources where they can have the greatest impact. From immediate emergency assistance to longer-term recovery efforts, our goal is to help communities move forward with dignity, stability, and hope.

To further this work, ICF maintains three dedicated disaster relief funds:

  • Mexico, Puebla, and Morelos Fund: Supporting recovery and relief efforts for communities across these regions
  • Baja California Disaster Relief Fund: Dedicated to addressing disaster-related needs throughout the Baja California region.
  • International Disaster Relief Fund: Supporting disaster response and recovery efforts beyond Mexico when communities around the world are in need.

ICF's commitment to disaster relief goes beyond responding to an emergency. Our efforts help provide essential resources such as food, clean water, temporary shelter, health services, and other critical forms of assistance to individuals and families whose lives have been disrupted.

With your support, we can help communities respond in moments of crisis while laying the foundation for a safer, more inclusive, and more resilient future. Every contribution can help bring critical resources to people when they need them most and remind those affected that they are not facing these challenges alone.

Together, we can unite communities, inspire hope, and deliver meaningful support during some of life's most uncertain moments.
