Dave have lived his life with schizophrenia and the symptoms have affected his activities which he would do well before. However, to live a life does not mean to live alone doing everything alone. With appropriate support, many of the people with disabilities can live at home and in communities. Meanwhile, it is far from ideal if family members, especially elderly parents, are the sole care givers.
Dave’s case may illustrate necessity and importance of another style- such community health care as Chhahari is providing; Home visiting care helps clients to take medication and visit hospitals regularly, stimulates their activities of daily living, as well as builds social bonds with a message “you are not alone”. Day care program provides clients with a place to stay and meet with others in similar situation as well as allows their families to rest and obtain information on mental health. Also, it is very important to support medical expenses to encourage the clients in vulnerable economic condition to get medical treatment.
Chhahari’s approach can be a model of multi-faceted support in mental health for clients, families, and societies-- cure for clients’ suffering from the distress and care for their lives in the houses and communities; care for the families giving care for them; and advocacy on mental health care policy and fight against social stigma.
