Maintaining one’s hygiene is the most important task to lead a healthy life, and this takes centre stage during menstruation. The situation, however, is stuck up in the rural areas of India here women / adolescent girls still face hygiene challenges especially when it comes to menstruation.
Some of the challenges faced are lack of closer spaces, use of cloth over sanitary napkins, lack of knowledge, social taboos and the silent treatment where as a society talking about menstruation is considered disgraceful.
For girls residing at child care institutions, the ordeal is far more challenging as they really do not have their family to discuss & express their feelings during these days. It has been our endeavour to conduct sessions on safe menstrual hygiene & allowing the girls a forum to discuss and gain knowledge on menstruation.
At one of our supported homes in rural Mumbai, close to 20 girls in the age group of 15 to 18 years had never used sanitary napkins. Owing to lack of funds, they were forced to use cloth which would pose untold challenges to these girls. When they received their first set of sanitary napkins a few months ago & were oriented on the usage & benefits of these, they were blown away & happy that their menstruation woes would now end! The girls are able to cope with their monthly cycle far more confidently.
We’re helping break the menstruation taboo – one girl at a time!
