If girls are to live healthy and productive lives with dignity, menstrual hygiene is a priority. In many areas, there is complete neglect of menstrual hygiene due to low awareness levels and lack of access to sanitary products. CSA is running this project for promotion of Menstrual Hygiene combined with health education for adolescent girls & providing a regular supply of sanitary napkins.
It has been revealed that about 43 percent of Indian women did not have access to sanitary essentials at the beginning of periods, while 36 percent felt uncomfortable in buying them with other customers around.
According to a survey conducted by Women Health Organisation as many as 67 percent women have had to borrow a sanitary essential from a friend, colleague or family member. But if this is a situation in privileged families then can you imagine how these underprivileged girls living in Child Care Institutes (Orphanages) must be managing?
Girls living in Child Care Institutes face many challenges and difficulties because of lack of knowledge and an awkward feeling regarding menstrual cycle, for example lack of importance & proper usage of napkin, safe-clean disposal procedure methods etc.
With a strong belief that education on the subject is critical, CSA is running this campaign with an objective to create maximum awareness about menstrual hygiene. Not just basic knowledge about Menstrual Cycle but also Menstruation Facts, knowledge about female reproductive system, menstrual hygiene devices, cleanliness, usage & disposal of Napkins etc.
Till date CSA has provided 2 packets (consisting of 8 napkins each) to 250+ girls at various Child Care Institutes (Orphanages) at multiple locations. Since January this year, regular awareness and trainign sessions are being conducted on related topics like hormonal changes, menstrual cycle, hygiene & cleanliness practices.
With an objective to break the myth/taboo around menstruation, we hope that provision of sanitary kits along with awareness trainings, will bring about much needed awareness & knowledge for girls at orphanages to move forth confidently!
