Welcome dance performed by girls

As part of regular visits to remotely based Child Care institutions (CCIs), our team visited a CCI in Madhya Pradesh to understand the needs and working patterns of Child Care Institutions (CCI) in these locations.

The local team had organised a fun life-skill training session with the children of the CCI to break the ice on Day 1. On the 2nd day, we realised that a few girls were missing, on enquiring further ,we were told that the girls had got their menses and preferred to skip the sessions planned since they were not comfortable moving around & interacting with people.

We realised lack of awareness poses a huge challenge when it comes to tackling India’s menstrual hygiene scenario. The Indian Council for Medical Research’s 2011-12 report stated that 38 per cent menstruating girls in India spoke to their mothers about menstruation. In case of girls living in CCIs, they do not have parental support & hardly interact with anybody else to talk about their fears & challenges during their menstruation days . Women & young adolescent girls across India grow up remaining unaware of the real reasons for menstruation and the importance of menstrual hygiene. The taboo surrounding menstruation remains a part of their growing up and continues with the generations to come.

Our team’s focus is around breaking down the myths and taboos surrounding menstruation. Time and again, efforts have been made to make adolescent girls in the CCI’s aware about how this process is natural, increase menstrual hygiene awareness through training sessions & open dialogue. By taking steps to ensure hygiene, we hope that girls at CCI’s will be eventually able to go about their daily chores just like the rest.

Slowly & steadily our efforts are paying off but there is still, a lot of awareness & work that needs to be done to help adolescent girls growing up at CCI’s deal with menstruation.
