Background
Voices of Women Media organized six day program in Bardiya District from November 12 -17, 2016 for families whose family members got disappeared during the armed conflict in Nepal. The theme for the mural "The search of the missing family members and the much longer search for the truth" was developed through conceptualization of images from the personal stories and weaving them in to a design by searching common element in each story.
Activities
We worked with muralist Martin Travers and people from different age groups and ethnicities from the families whose members got disappeared to portray their stories. For the first two days of the program, participants were asked to share their stories of pain. Then they were asked different questions to express their stories through the art and picture so that the real scenario could be displayed. Everyone participated in the process.
Achievements
The mural is a small window into the stories of many people who were effected by the conflict in Nepal; focusing on Bardiya. This has rarely been talked about in Nepal and not many people know that the most amount of disappeared in the conflict were from Bardiya district. We hope that this mural will positively keep the flame of longing and memory alive for all to see and feel as well as to continue the healing process for the families who are still struggling with their loved ones being gone.
Conclusion and Recommendation
There was a very limited budget for our program. However we were successful to organize it through your support. We are thankful for your help. For continuing this project as well as to getting better outcomes we need your support or any kind of help in future.
