Tanisi Pals!
Our last check in back in January was so full of rad updates, and so many hopes for our next season, but given the announcement of the highly transmittable variant of Covid (Omicron) in January, we have had a slower start to our season - but that’s not setting the tone for our plans!
As mentioned in our last update, we held off having events through the end of January and that actually rolled through into both February and March. The concern for the community we serve in keeping them healthy and safe is paramount to our cause - being that Medicine Wheels was born out of need of safety and reprieve for underrepresented folks, we had to alter our plans for the time being.
One of our partners, Skate Like A Girl Portland alongside Medicine Wheels Rose City hosted an online event “A Wheely Good Info Session” where we chatted about wheels and what we use, what is best and the differences between them! We are hoping to do more of these collaborations in the future, to make skating info is accessible and fun for everyone!
With all that being said, we slowly picked up by having our first in person meet at the end of March! It was so great to see familiar faces and new faces! We met to do a water acknowledgement and then skated at Taylor Electric for a few hours eating pizza, drinking bubbly waters and snacking on chips!
And the best part, we were even able to break in our new(ish) grind bars we made in January, which was really cool!
This past week we also held our first distro of the season at Kunamokwst park, it was such a weird rainy day, but despite that, we had a nice turnout of folks, we ate tamales and skated around!
Moving into May we will be hosting a distro event, and then with June, we’re going to to be doing our first road trip to Keizer, Oregon! We’re working with a local volunteer to set up an event for youth that may not have access to the equipment they need to participate in skating by giving away ten skateboards and helmets! The entire Medicine Wheels Rose City crew is really excited about this endeavour, it’s gonna be such a fun day!
We will also be hosting more distros and meetups through the summer and warmer seasons with two events per month!
We know we’ve said it before, but none of this could be done without your ongoing support.
Thanks for helping keep us rolling into this next season!
Hay Hay,
S.A.
