Situation Update

Three months have passed since a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the Arequipa region of southern Peru, leaving 420 homes collapsed and more than 1,700 damaged. As of April 25, 2018, Peru’s respected national newspaper, El Comercio, reports that recovery efforts have been slowed by the current change of government. For example, as a temporary relief measure, the Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation had promised 308 housing modules to the affected province of Caravelí. Three months later, only 240 have been installed. The delivery of these housing modules was stopped due to the change of government, and in order to resume their delivery and begin the reconstruction process, both a new law and a supreme decree will have to be passed. This process takes time, while families wait.

Project Update

Several hours north of this area, RMF Peru continues providing primary healthcare services at our well-established clinic, Policlínico Peruano Americano, in Pisco. Although our team stands ready to assist affected communities of Arequipa, sufficient funding has not yet been reached to implement outreaches in Arequipa.
