Since starting our monthly hot meal program, Community LUV, we have served breakfast and hot lunch to approximately 400 people during our six months of operation. Before enjoying their meal, almost half of our guests take advantage of the free, hot showers, and fresh clothes. Around 40% also choose to enjoy a fresh hair cut after showering.
As the weather in Houston becomes hotter, we expect the need for showers to increase. That may pose some challenges because at this stage, we only have two showers available. We will continue to provide the service to as many people as possible as we brainstorm other solutions.
Many of our guests are experiencing homelessness and some are completely unsheltered. One person shared with us that after taking a shower and having a haircut, they felt like a completely new person. Through the length of the program, we also provided COVID education and social services. It is our plan to incorporate mental health service providers over the next few months.
