Your impact through Rosie's Place's Food Programs

By Liz Silva | Development Operations Manager

Thank you so much for your support of Rosie’s Place’s Food Programs. Thanks to generous friends like you, we are providing meals and groceries to more women and children in need, than ever before. Our welcoming Dining Room serves a tasty and nourishing meal—365 days a year—to about 300 women and their children each day. This year, Rosie’s Place’s Dining Room anticipates serving more than 100,000 nutritionally balanced meals.

From January 1, 2016 through March 31, 2016:

  • 5,161 breakfasts were served
  • 11,540 brunches/lunches were served.
  • 8,461 dinners were served.
  • A special meal was also served to our guests on Rosie’s Place’s 42nd anniversary.
  • This is a total of 25,163 meals served.

At Rosie’s Place we are proud to serve our guests not only hearty meals, but healthy meals which meet our high nutritional standards.

From January 1, 2016 through March 31, 2016:

100% of meals served included 1 serving of fruit
99% of lunches and dinners served included 2 servings of vegetables
99% of lunches and dinners served contained at least 12 grams of fiber
96% of meals served included the recommended sodium content
96% of meals served included the recommended fat and calorie content
96% of breakfasts served included foods containing at least 3 grams of fiber.

Because many of our guests work during our Dining Room’s meal times and/or have families who are hungry too, we offer Rosie’s Place Groceries. Here again, we make every effort to provide healthy and fresh food to our guests as well as nutritional recipes and fact sheets.

From January 1, 2016 through March 31, 2016:

Our Groceries program provided 5,563 women and their households, with two bags (20 to 30 pounds) of groceries. This is a 22% increase from this quarter last year. Of these guests, 502 women or 9% were first-time users.

Now in its fifth year, the Fresh Food Initiative has been an extremely successful effort to incorporate more fresh fruits and vegetables into the meals we serve. Rosie’s Place has partnered with a number of local farms throughout the growing season to donate fresh produce for our guests to enjoy. The items are picked up on a weekly basis by a group of dedicated volunteers or are delivered directly to Rosie’s Place by the farm.

Our Dining Room serves salad and soup at every meal and both are made with fresh vegetables, as opposed to canned. This donated produce is also included in meals as appetizers and/or side dishes. In addition, the fruits and vegetables are offered in our Groceries program. It is very often, the only fresh produce our guests and their families bring into their homes.

We invite you take a few minutes to watch the following video featuring Rosie’s Place’s own garden, started and run by the women we serve. You will see how, like the plants and vegetables, our guests are also growing–transforming their lives in positive ways every day.

Thank you for supporting our critical Food Programs. Your generosity allows us to nourish and help thousands of poor and homeless women and their children who count on us each year. Rosie’s Place is grateful for friends like you and we know that our work will continue because of your support. And as a reminder, this Wednesday, June 15th is GlobalGiving’s second Pro-Rated Bonus day of the year. You’ll have the opportunity to double your impact as GlobalGiving will match donations received on this day up to a pro-rated percent.
