In Guatemala, the educational system has still not gone back to how it was pre-
pandemic. The schools are still closed, and students are still doing their
schoolwork from their houses. The students who are part of Cojolya’s Mano a
Mano program can go to Cojolya’s offices to use the computers and the internet
and receive tutoring and help with reading.
Every fifteen days the students participate in reading sessions so that they keep
learning and expanding their perspectives by studying other cultures. Through
their reading materials, the students travel to other places and use their
imaginations.
The students love their reading sessions. They really enjoy relating ideas from
the reading to their reality and gaining context about the world around them
through studying other cultures from faraway places.
Dulce, the newest student in our program, loves to read. She won a reading
contest at our local library last year and loves to talk about the books that she
reads. Her favorite class is Communication and Language, because she always
really likes the books that they recommend to her. She comes to the Cojolya
offices often to do her homework and to read books online.
Lidia, another student in the program, is 7 years old and is learning to read. She
is very happy with her progress and feels empowered by her new skills. Every
student is doing their best to keep learning, despite the difficult reality of the
pandemic in Guatemala.
