The Continuing Medical Education Workshop

Every month, the midwives at Shanti participate in a workshop that allows them to further their medical education. Today’s workshop began with two educational and engaging videos. These videos introduced new birthing positions other than the common sitting or reclined position. The videos also taught the staff additional ways they can support a mother, a baby, or a partner. After watching, the midwives had the opportunity to answer questions about the knowledge learned and to take up their findings. The following are some examples of what they shared:

“Making sounds is good, like panting and moaning”. The women then laughed as they practised the different sounds, for example “ahhhhs”.

“Lunging, squatting, and walking are good birthing exercises”. The midwives then demonstrated their best exercises for those who needed clarification.

After this, the staff were asked to divide into partners and were each given a scenario. In pairs, they discussed what actions they would take to care for a mother. With pillows tucked in their shirts and props pulled from different rooms, the women then had a good laugh as they demonstrated their scenarios to each other. The midwives had many kind words and questions during their role playing…

“You are going to be well” , “You will make it mother" , “Breathe deep” , “How do you feel now?”

Shanti’s midwives learned and laughed a lot this morning. Not only are the Continuing Medical Education workshop’s informative, but hands on and practical as well. It is because of the staff’s hard work and workshops such as this that Shanti has been able to progress.

We thank you for your continuous interest and support in our maternal health project, as it provides our staff opportunities such as these to bond and to furthur their medical knowledge that may be applied at the Birth House.
