Lifesaving Care for Mothers & Babies: Rural Kenya

This year, Village HopeCore International is continuing to offer our full range of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) services, and thank goodness we are, because for children like Emmanuel and Sheila, these clinics are the difference between a lifetime of disability and a future of opportunity.

When our team first met Emmanuel at a village-based MCH clinic, we almost lost our chance to help him. He was only five months old, and screening revealed his eyes were misaligned—a condition called strabismus. We referred him for surgery, but his mother was terrified. She was out of our care for 18 months.

Our team didn't give up. We kept visiting, kept reassuring her. At age three, in February 2026, Emmanuel had his surgery, and today, his eyes are straight. He isn't just seeing better; he is finally playing and learning with a confidence he never had before. His mother told us, “I don’t know what would have happened without this support. You have really helped me.”

Your generosity has allowed us to monitor the growth of 728 children just like him. Our team at the office clinic and village-based MCH clinics celebrated healthy children during growth monitoring and also identified 211 children struggling with malnutrition.

This is where your impact makes a real difference for children like Sheilah. At 27 months old, she weighed just 8.5kg. She was so weak from malnutrition. Her mother was doing her absolute best, but they were surviving on plain starch—mashed bananas and rice—which fills the belly but starves the body. By 32 months and under our care, Sheilah moved from severe malnutrition to 10.2kg. Now, Sheilah is healthy, playful, and her appetite is back. She is one of the 25 children we successfully helped recover to a healthy state through our nutrition clinics. Because of you, we stepped in just in time. We enrolled her in our nutrition program and provided supplementation. But the most beautiful part? We taught her mom how to grow a simple kitchen garden in their tiny rental space.

Her mother is so proud of those fresh vegetables she’s growing. She told us, “Since you taught me proper child care and feeding practices, my child has developed a good appetite and has gained weight.” You helped a mother move from fear to confidence. From survival to stability. This is what your giving does.

In this quarter, our MCH clinics have attended to 211 malnourished children just like Sheilah. For every success story we celebrate, there is another "Emmanuel" in a distant village whose vision is fading, or a mother with insufficient information on how to feed her child. Emmanuel and Sheilah are thriving because you said "yes" last quarter. Will you say "yes" again today for underserved children?
