A warm fun day with local communities

Planting mangroves!

The end of the year was plenty of great experiences in the wetland thanks to your help! We enjoyed a full day of fieldwork and fun during our Environmental Festival in Ciudad Cortés, on December 13, which was the final activity of our program in 2014.

First thing in the morning, we visited Ciudad Cortés Public School "Valle del Diquis", the base of one of our Environmental Clubs. The kids and their teachers prepared a nice cultural presentation including dancing (they have a lot of talent!), we had the participation of their families, several important members of the community and from the other school that was part of the program, Eduardo Garnier School (Palmar Norte). We had the nice company of Mr. Alexandre Guyot, from the Swiss Embassy in Costa Rica (they are also supporting our work!).

After that, we went to visit the Térraba Sierpe National Wetland (HNTS), near the community of Coronado of Sierpe. There, our friends of COOPEMANGLE (a local organization that works with us conserving mangroves) receive us and guided us during a reforestation activity. Everyone had their own mangrove seedlings and we planted them together.  The kids from the schools planted the seedlings that they grew in their experimental nurseries. Now those mangrove trees have a new home!

By the end of the day, we visited our friends of APREMAA, the local fishermen and “piangueros” association that is working with us developing and maintaining a new mangrove nursery in a place called Ajuntaderas, which is also located in the HNTS.  They have done an excellent work building the nursery and now we have almost 2.000 new seedlings growing and strengthening! We took the opportunity to inaugurate the brand new sign of the project.

Thanks to Jeannette and Vielka, our local environmental teachers, for all the hard work on this festival!

Helps us spreading the voice! We need more help to take care of those 10.000 mangrove trees!

Happy New Year!
