One of the main activities of the Blue Communities Project is to create a mangrove nursery for the reforestation of Térraba Sierpe National Wetland.

The choice of the site to develop the nursery and the reforestation activities shall be developed by inhabitants of the wetland, leaders in their communities.

Ajuntaderas community in Sierpe is formed mainly by Fishermen and Piangueros (Andara tuberculosa harvesters) who maintain a very close relationship with wetland resources. That's where we found the Association of Ajuntaderas Piangueros (APA), a strong community group with important organizational capacity to carry out the activities mentioned above.

On September 14th we visited Ajuntaderas to present the project to the community, with very good reception from them. Subsequently, we performed a field recognition of the Sierpe River with members of the APA and ACOSA officials in order to choose the best place to carry out the mangrove nursery and the reforestation activities.

At Fundación Neotrópica we look forward to working with APA fishermen in 2014!
