Celebrating International Mangrove Tree day with local communities and government authorities

Did you know that 26th of july was the International Mangrove Tree Day? Well, because of that and because we love mangroves and we know its importance for local communities, we decided to do something special this year.

We invited Costa Rican Viceminister of Water, Seas, Coasts and Wetlands, Fernando Mora Rodríguez to visit us and meet with key local leaders related to mangrove conservation. He is, besides the Minister of Environment itself, the higher rank authority in charge of wetland issues. And he said yes!

Fernando joined us in a powerful meeting that taked place in one of the local schools we are working with, the Boca de Sierpe School.  There, he met with local conservation authorities, community stakeholders and representatives of our Project (even our Executive Director, Bernardo Aguilar, was there!).

They discussed about the importance of the local communities involvement in conservation, specially for the wellbeing of Terraba-Sierpe National Wetland. New ideas and perspectives raised from the talk.  And after that, we all went to the mangroves for a Little hands on field trip!

Nothing better than meet with people commited with real ground-up conservation processes!

Thanks to you to make this posible with your support to our Project! We are doing great things together, improving local realities and conserving this important ecosystems.

"It is very important to raise awareness in people. In Costa Rica many of the areas [of mangrove trees] are degraded and we should develop a series of high-level public policies; it also requires a great arm, the arm of citizenship, in order to assist its conservation" Fernando Mora, Viceminister

"The search for a model of community conservation requires the involvement of all local stakeholders and the government, but mainly the communities that are the ones that work daily to protect our country's mangroves", Bernardo Aguilar, Fundaciòn Neotrópica.

Next time we will show you our brand new mangrove nursery! We are very excited about it!

Happy Mangrove Tree Day!

In the mangrove!
In the mangrove!
Hands on!
Hands on!
