Dear [donor first name],
Thank you for supporting Wuqu’ Kawoq’s Fight Malnutrition in Rural Guatemala project through GlobalGiving. I would like to share Emily’s story from the community of La Esperanza, San Juan Ostuncalco:
Nutrition Technician Blanca was visiting a patient in La Esperanza, when she walked past Emily’s home. Emily’s grandmother had seen Blanca several times in the community and stopped her to ask about her work. After their conversation, Blanca scheduled an initial visit with the family, where she met Adela, Emily’s mother. During the visit, Blanca evaluated Emily and diagnosed her with moderate growth delay. Her treatment included six months of monthly home visits, nutrition education for both her mother and grandmother, and the provision of nutritional supplements along with essential foods such as eggs and beans.
After six months of care, Emily reached an appropriate weight and height for her age and was no longer at risk of malnutrition. She received an additional two months of follow-up to ensure her progress continued.
Emily is Adela’s first child. During the intervention, Adela was pregnant again. At first, she had negative perceptions about prenatal care, including taking prenatal vitamins. However, she participated in the program’s group nutrition classes, where she learned about proper nutrition during pregnancy. After that, she began taking her vitamins and even started a home garden to support her nutrition. When her son was born, he arrived strong and healthy, with no sign of malnutrition.
Your support allows us to continue accompanying families facing malnutrition with culturally grounded care. Together, we are helping children grow healthier and communities build stronger futures.
Thank you for being part of this work.
