Since our last report, the problem with the neighbor cows persisted. The cows were so accustomed to using the land that Jimmy would find them waiting at the fence to be let in! We eventually had to take action and called in the police to gently remind the neighbor he couldn’t use the land anymore. Luckily they didn’t do any damage and the trees are thriving but taking action was a long and complicated process that’s made us even more determined to buy this land for the Maleku.
The newly planted 14 hectares will grow to join the existing 24 hectares creating a large rich forest that will provide the resources the Maleku traditional life depends upon. Buying this 38 hectare property would be the first step in recuperating the Maleku ancestral land and it would be a proud achievement for us all. We have to raise $300,000 in order to buy this land, but giving back what is rightfully theirs to the Maleku and protecting another part of our planet will be worth every penny.
