Net Vouchers for Women and Children in Tanzania

By Kelly Mahoney | Grants Manager

Thanks to overwhelming global support, Tanzania’s “universal coverage” mosquito net campaign is fully funded and scheduled to begin in October 2010, following the country’s successful “under-five” campaign.  With these campaigns, Tanzania is on track to achieving “universal coverage” of mosquito nets, ensuring that every person at risk of malaria receives a long-lasting insecticide-treated mosquito net (LLIN) to keep them safe from the disease.  To complement the “universal mosquito net coverage” effort, Malaria No More is working with partners including the Mennonite Economic Development Associates to ensure that pregnant women and children have access to life-saving mosquito nets on an ongoing basis through a unique LLIN voucher program.

Donations through Global Giving will be invested with support from other generous Malaria No More donors to contribute over $60,000 to help fund a program whereby vouchers, redeemable to support the purchase of LLINs, are distributed to mothers during clinic visits.  Global Giving funds will specifically support vouchers for children under the age of five.  This effort is hoped to make a significant impact in reducing overall child mortality.

It is particularly exciting to see Tanzania, a large and influential East African country, whose president also happens to be the current president of the newly-formed African Leaders Malaria Alliance, make such a strong commitment to ending malaria deaths.  As we continue to support these efforts, thanks to the generous support of donors like you, not only are we helping Tanzanians protect themselves from malaria, we are also helping the country to set an example of success and encourage other African countries to join the malaria fight.
