Summary
This project fulfills some dreams, hopes and wishes of our older adults living in Cedar Village, in an independent or assisted living apartment, or in one of the units in the long term Skilled Nursing Center. These possibilities improve the quality of living nearing their end of life.
Challenge
Many adults in a retirement community feel distanced from their families if their loved ones do not live locally. In addition, they, or their loved ones, may not have disposable income for the “little extras” or a dream they thought that might never become a reality. This is the most rewarding gift given to an adult who is in pain, lonely, or is truly at the end of their time; we may make them forget their pain – just for a short time, see them smile and show them they are loved. An example of this is the huge birthday celebration Cedar Village had for our resident, Esther Slomovits, who turned 107 this year. She is a blind Holocaust survivor who retains the best outlook on life, and we all continue to learn from her.
Solution
Obtain the resources to grant these small miracles for these very deserving individuals and expand this program to more deserving adults.
Long-Term Impact
The long-term effect will not only benefit the recipient, but will spread the joy among the other residents living at Cedar Village by the sharing of these experiences. Through these conversations, it is possible that some residents might glean a wish or two for themselves and have something to hope for.
