Building on earlier efforts to introduce The Virtues Project (TVP) within Tanzania’s community-health system, an important demonstration session was organised during a side event at the Human Resources for Health Conference in June 2026. Community Health Workers (CHWs) and Health Care Workers (HCWs) demonstrated how virtues-based communication, play and simple early-learning activities can be integrated into routine counselling for parents and caregivers. The session showed how HCWs can model these practices during health-facility contacts, while CHWs can reinforce them through household visits—extending support from the clinic into children’s everyday home environments. This represents encouraging progress from earlier advocacy and introductory training toward practical application within existing health services.
Through the demonstrations, participating health workers showed how parents can be supported to recognise children’s signals, respond with patience and care, encourage learning through play, and guide behaviour without violence. Simple virtues-based approaches—such as acknowledging a parent’s patience, encouraging kindness and responsibility, and turning difficult parenting situations into teachable moments—make responsive caregiving more understandable and practical. By sharing these examples with other health professionals at the conference, the participating CHWs and HCWs became champions who can inspire wider adoption of nurturing, non-violent parenting support across health facilities and communities.
This progress demonstrates the sustainability and wider potential of investing in frontline workers. A single trained CHW or HCW can repeatedly reach many families through clinic counselling, community education and household visits, allowing the benefits to continue well beyond one training session. Continued contributions through GlobalGiving will help us mentor participating workers, document results, develop simplified Swahili virtues and play materials, and organise further demonstrations and training sessions. With sustained support, TVP can become an increasingly practical part of routine parenting counselling—helping more Tanzanian children grow in homes characterised by love, respect, safety and opportunities to learn.
