A Second Helping of Hope

A Second Helping of Hope

At lunchtime in Makindu, a small girl held out her plate shyly for a second helping of food—the first time in her life she’d ever done so. Around her, laughter filled the air as other children waited patiently in line for their meals. In a place where food is often scarce and drought unrelenting, that second serving meant so much more than just extra beans and rice—it meant security, health, and the rare joy of having enough.

Across this sunbaked region of Kenya, where the drought has stretched into its 40th year, the Makindu Children’s Program (MCP) and Makindu Children’s Center (MCC) remain a steady source of nourishment and relief. One of the most impactful lifelines the Center provides is its bulk food delivery program, which brings essential supplies directly to 389 households several times a year.

Each delivery includes staples like maize, beans, rice, and cooking oil—simple ingredients that sustain entire families for three to four weeks. For just $50 per household, donors help fill empty kitchens and restore a sense of normalcy for guardians who are doing everything they can to keep their children fed.

Many of these families live up to 25 kilometers away from the Center, walking long distances in blistering heat to collect their food parcels. Few have bicycles or vehicles, and farming in the region’s rocky, arid soil is nearly impossible. Crops fail again and again, leaving families dependent on support from MCC to survive.

When the food arrives, relief spreads quickly. Parents and guardians know they will be able to cook a meal that night. Children know they will sleep with full stomachs. For families who have weathered years of hunger, these deliveries are more than assistance—they are acts of care, love, and dignity.

Without these food deliveries, malnutrition would rise sharply, and the most vulnerable—children and elderly guardians—would suffer most. Instead, because of the generosity of donors and the dedication of MCC staff, families across Makindu are nourished, children are stronger, and hope persists even in the hardest seasons.

That little girl’s second helping symbolizes what every delivery represents: a chance not just to survive, but to thrive.
Your support makes that moment—and thousands more like it—possible. Together, we’re feeding families, fortifying futures, and ensuring that no child in Makindu goes hungry.
