From Malnourishment to Health & Happiness

Healthy and happy in 2023
Healthy and happy in 2023

Bulk food relief has been instrumental in this girl's and her mother's nourishment and well-being. When these two first came into our program, they were sickly and malnourished. After only four months of proper and consistent nutrition, both were healthy again. Fast forward 15 years, and the mother and daughter are thriving! Not only are they eating well and daily, they are making supplementary income from the sale of excess eggs and goat milk. This income has been enough to make minor repairs on their home, to purchase brand new chairs, and to provide a couple smart looking outfits for both of them. The daughter does well in school and they both have joy in the present and hope for the future.

These two benefit greatly from:

1. Relief food delivered every other month. This is a collaborative effort made possible by the donations of unimix and beans from the county and discounted and delivered grains and cooking oil from a local food supplier.

2. Hot nutritious meals at the Center. They live too far away from the Center to come daily, but on some Saturdays they walk the many kilometers to enjoy a meal and social opportunities at the Center.

3. Egg-laying chickens and dairy goats have given this mother and daughter not only nourishment, but also income. The eggs and goat milk serve as valuable sources of protein and other essential nutrients, providing a sustainable and locally-sourced solution to their nutritional needs. Their many chickens provide excess eggs, which they sell to supplement their income.

Food security is one of our main focus items as the guardians constantly face water scarcity and the nation remains plagued with high fuel prices. The last planting season yielded a small amount of green grams (a type of bean) and enough rain to green up vegetation for the goats, thereby increasing the production of the wonderfully nutritious goat milk. We are hopeful the next planting season will provide some relief as well. Meanwhile, these two will continue to thrive as they make good use of the nutritional programs we offer.

Even though perennial challenges remain, we are proud to report that this family remains nourished and healthy. Thank you for helping us feed and empower them!
