Kamsi Village Community Meeting
Kamsi Village Community Meeting

We are back to bring news from a village you know so well, by now, Kamsi in Burkina Faso.

In our latest news, the GWGL team is happy to report that they met with the Women Cooperative Group of Kamsi.  These are the ladies that have started growing vegetables for sale and for home use. The meeting was a huge success as many critical and urgent topics were discussed.

Our team was accompanied by an engineer who took measurements with the goal to retrofit the rainwater basin with a drip irrigation system. We are keen to install a solar powered drip irrigation system that will increase vegetable production and utilize their precious water resource more efficiently!

You may recall that the construction of the rainwater catchment basin helped feed the water table in the village. We are happy to report that are now eight market garden wells, 4 of which have a depth of 39 feet and 4 of them range in depth from19 to 33 feet.

A representative of the local Agriculture Department attended this meeting as well and encouraged the lady gardeneres to avoid using costly and harmful pesticides. One highlight of the meeting was when the women decided to make the cultivation of onions and cabbages their main products for the next season.

A word of thanks from his majesty Chief Tigre of Kamsi: "We are very pleased to receive the good news brought by the CBG-WA team. The drip irrigation project using solar energy is accepted by the population of Kamsi. We thank the embassy of the United States which visited our water retention basin in January 2016.  Thanks also go to the donors from Global Giving, who are helping alleviate the difficulties for women who walk long distances to have water".

Madelaine explains: "Having the water retention basin is a great joy for all the women of Kamsi. With water, we grow vegetables to feed our children and our husbands. This new irrigation project with help from Global Giving and the US Embassy will greatly assist us with irrigating our crops and gardens. "I wish God to give you the strength to execute the project to improve our land and village."

Kanzié says: "After the rehabilitation of the basin, we have the availability of water year round.  Our women’s cooperative grows fresh vegetables that we use for family meals and selling at the market. Thank you so very much.”

Women taking charge of their livelihoods and managing a precious resource! A community transformed with your help.

Thank you!
