Community Building Group is still in the process of raising funds in order to build two new rainwater catchment basins in the villages of Kougny located at Nayala province, and in the village of Djomga located in province of Séno. Community Building Group is anticipating to raise more funds, and work tidily with the central government to build these two basins by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, with the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives (FCIL), our local office (CBG-WA) has installed two new small scale drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation systems all powered by solar energy. These systems are part of our prototypes assembly locally by combining solar panels and DC pumps to supply water from hand dig wells to the farms. Thanks to the Canadian funding, the two villages have brand new vegetables farms where women are now producing tomatoes, cabbages, onion, hibiscus, lettuce, cucumbers and so on…
By having the rainwater catchment basin, it will retrofit these systems and secure water availability in order to sustain the irrigation farming activities.
The beneficiary of these two projects whom are mostly women have expressed their Joyce and satisfaction for being able to irrigate their farm by solar energy, as oppose to manual which indeed take eight hours of work a day.
A quote from Salimata, one of the beneficiary of the solar irrigation pumping system project: "I am very happy for having this irrigation farm with solar energy pump, I thank the Embassy of Canada for funding this project for us, and our thanks to CBG-WA for making this project a success. We can’t believe we got this technology here in the far far remote area where we have no power. We use to spend all day working on a very little plot to grow onion and tomatoes. Now, we got 0.5ha of drip irrigation and 0.25 ha of sprinkler. We got more time now to do other things at home. CBG-WA has trained us how to operate and manage the farm, they also provided us with fertilizer and seeds. Now we are organized into small group of 10 to work in the fixed schedule. We hope in the future, we got a new basin to catch more water for our village, because with water we can do everything in our village.
Testimony from Djenéba who is the President of the warbi-Djam women group of Djomga: "We can’t thank enough the Canadian Embassy, because they made our work much easier and productive, and feel like young people are aging faster than their age due to manual work. Now we are operating with solar energy. We thanks give water give life project. May God bless you all for this collaboration "
