Water Basins for 8,000 Villages using Solar Power

On December 20, 2018, the CBG-WA team traveled to visit the solar irrigation system installed in the village of Kougny. The objective was to provide continuous technical support for the beginning of the new growing season.

The irrigation system installed in Kougny is now in its third growing season. After the first growing, the women have harvested their vegetable crops, and then started second cropping season, then thirds growing season is now taking place. So, one growing season after another.

 To secure the gardening, the women of the village of Kougny have made a wooden fence to protect their farm from animals.   They are preparing the nurseries for onion, tomatoes, and cabbage which will be planted in the coming 3 to 4 weeks.

 Alima, the president of the women group in Kougny said, “in addition to the onion, tomato, and cabbage, we will be planting in inter-crops rows (between rows) green peppers and red sorrel."

 CBG-WA team provided training to women, which empowered their productive capacity in irrigation farming. Furthermore, the capacity building for women includes farm economic management, water, and fertilizer efficient use and soil moisture monitoring for proper irrigation schedule. This indeed will maximize their farm net profits.

CBG-WA team has continuously provided technical support to village residents particularly to women. The previously built rainwater catchment basins in the village of Kamsi and Sissene have empowered women to work sustainably in their vegetables garden.

 Rosalie, a member of the women cooperative group in Kamsi, say, “we are proud of CBG-WA who always assisting us in our activities, thanks to all donors and helpers. Because of the water and energy power, we get vegetables to eat, as we continuously growth tomatoes, onion, cabbages, lettuce, corn, okra and other green leaf crops. Our food basket is very rich. Now I am in full harvest of fresh okra, and part will be for sale and the other part will be exclusively used for the family meal. Thanks to this project we have fresh vegetables at any time. Many people in other villages asked about our secret, I said, our recipes are water and solar power. With these two, we are good enough."

  Natalie, a 5th grader student of the primary school in the village of Kamsi stated that: “I came to help my grandmother to harvest okra. My grandmother will sell them at the market. I like to help her because she made some income from the solar energy irrigation farming. With this money she always manages to pay for my school tuition fees, and pay the contributions fees to parents association."

 In Djomga, CBG-WA met with women cooperative group on October 2, 2018, where two irrigation system powered by solar pumps were installed. The team provided training and support on the equipment maintenance and review the operation systems. Growers are now preparing their crop nursery for new cropping season. Stay tune!

 Your donations have positively impacted villages residents, women and children who have now fresh vegetables from their irrigation farming. The income generated help parents to pay the kids tuition fees and have food for their livelihood.  In addition, with the basin, rainwater has been stored, which in turn has improved access to water. Women and girls don't have to walk anymore long distance to fetch for water.
