By Dr. Alexander Berzin | Founder and Author of Berzin Archives
Dear friends,
Today marks 10 years since Berzin Archives evolved into Study Buddhism.
What many people may not know is that the project began very modestly: with Dr. Alexander Berzin working from his apartment in Berlin, carefully organizing decades of teachings, translations, notes, and recordings gathered throughout his life of study and travel with the crème de la crème of teachers from the Buddhist world.
Years before YouTube channels, podcasts, or social media strategies were a thing, Dr. Berzin’s goal was simple: to preserve and share authentic Buddhist teachings freely with anyone who wished to learn.
By 2016, Berzin Archives was already available in nearly 20 languages. But with the launch of Study Buddhism, the project expanded dramatically — we redesigned the entire platform from the ground up, added many more languages, produced videos and interviews, and created a more accessible home for Buddhist learning online.
Today, Study Buddhism offers content in 37 languages and has welcomed 15 million visitors over the past decade, with over 32 million articles read worldwide. This is something we can all rejoice in!
And, one thing has never changed:
Study Buddhism has always been completely free of charge and entirely free of advertising.
Over the last ten years, we’ve had the privilege of interviewing extraordinary Buddhist teachers, monastics, translators, scholars, scientists, and practitioners from many different traditions — including His Holiness the Karmapa, Mingyur Rinpoche, Ajahn Sumedho, Khandro Rinpoche, Venerable Guo Huei, Matthieu Ricard, Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron and many more. On YouTube, over 6 million visitors have spent the equivalent of 8,000 days watching these videos!
At the same time, new articles, transcripts, subtitles, and translations continue to be added constantly by our international team of translators, editors, and volunteers.
More recently, our work has also expanded into preserving and documenting the teachings and oral transmissions of Tsenshap Serkong Rinpoche II — helping ensure that the living tradition of Buddhism can continue to reach future generations around the world.
From a small apartment in Berlin to a global educational platform accessed by millions, none of this would have been possible without your support, encouragement, and participation over the years.
Thank you for being part of this journey!
With much gratitude,
Dr. Alexander Berzin and the Study Buddhism Team
