Seetabai's Quest to End Violence in Her Village

By Pravin Kadam | Programme Manager

Seetabai is one of those 25 zealous leaders who have promised to shoulder responsibility for safety of their village. This month, Seetabai reported a case of girls who is just 15 and was to be married off this Novemember. The team managed to prevent the child marriage and continuing her schooling. Child marriage being one of the major concern and its role in increasing vulnerability to violence including trafficking, We salute spirit of Seetabai and many like her who constantly strive to make villages and communities safe for women and children.

About The Project:

Women and children from rural communities are the most vulnerable group in India, susceptible to violence and sexual exploitation or trafficking. This is a multi-faceted and deep-rooted problem which has become a vicious cycle. Poverty and desperation drive many unknowing girls into sexual exploitation. The lack of education and awareness in the community coupled by gender discrimination and age-old traditions, means that girls do not know their rights and feel powerless in changing their fate. Save The Children India inpartnerhip with Operation Red Altert and Local NGOs , conducting safe village programmes. These village level interventions are equipping the locals with knowledge on issue of human trafficking and empowering them to act against violence in their villages. This measure nips the problem at its bud before exploitation even occurs, so that no girl will go through the traumatic experience.

Update of from The Quarter:

Save The Children India conducted Safe Village Programmes in 25 villages of Sangli and Solapur districts of Maharashtra, India and trained over 50,000 people of indentifying early signs, exercising vigilance and reporting of incidences.
