Dear Donors ,Friends and Well-wishers of The Association of People with Disability (APD).
We are glad to submit to you the quarterly report of our Mental health Program for People with Mental Illness
Thanks to GlobalGiving community for your generous support for rehabilitating these with People with Mental Illness.
The Association of People with Disability (APD) is a non-governmental organization working in the field of disability for the last fifty five years. APD aims to empower persons with disability to become active, contributing members of society. At any given time, through its wide-ranging institutional and district development programmes, APD touches the lives of approximately 30,000 persons with disability (PWDs).
APD’s grassroots rural and urban community programmes include therapeutic services, mobility aids, integrated education, advocacy, horticulture, mental health and livelihood.
Our “District Disability and DevelopmentProgramme” is operating in four districts of Karnataka: Chikkaballapur, Davangere, Bijapur and Bengaluru. Here we work with government agencies, self-help groups and other stakeholders on identification, assessment, referral, capacity building, lobbying and implementation of disability rights, to encourage the system to make necessary provisions for people with disability. Currently APD is working with over 10,000PWDs in these districts.
Community Mental Health Programme
Mental health is a growing concern that calls for immense focus from all quarters. It is estimated that 1% of the population, almost 10 million people in the country suffer from some form of mental illness. State level figures report over 50 Lakh Persons with Mental Illness (PWMIs) and mental retardation in Karnataka who are being supported by less than 700 health care professionals, doctors and social workers.
The focus of public health system is still on mortality rather than morbidity and dysfunction which are on the rise in India. Access to mental health care is another major issue that is compounded by social stigma and lack of awareness. In economically challenged social groups, both urban and rural, PWMIs are subject to neglect, isolation, abuse and traditional forms of treatment -all of which tend to have a negative impact.
APD’s Community Mental Health Programme has been operating since 2004. Starting with 19 slums in Bangalore, the programme now covers almost specific taluks of Kolar, Davangere, Chikkaballapur and Bijapur. In the last 10 years, we have reached almost 2000 Persons with Mental Illness (PWMIs) through targeted activities including identification, providing access to mental health care and social and economic rehabilitation. Our beneficiaries have typically been economically disadvantaged/socially marginalized rural or urban slum dwellers in the age group 16-45.
