Child Crisis Center Uganda's (CCCU) mission has always been to bring accessible education to the underdeveloped community of Magooli, Uganda. In this remote part of Uganda, the children who were fortunate enough to attend school (prior to CCCU’s involvement), had to put up with undesirable circumstances that led to a high dropout rate. The children used to walk 4-5 kilometers to school in the morning and then 4-5 kilometers back home. This walk is not only long, but it is dangerous for many of the children (especially the girls) and they are walking barefoot and in all weather conditions. During the school day, a child attending government schools will be in a classroom of at least 50 children (and sometimes upwards of 200 children) in a classroom all trying to compete for attention and direction from one teacher. Child Crisis Center Uganda has worked hard to bring a nonprofit educational academy to the community and alleviate the need for the children to travel and compete in overcrowded government schools.
Child Crisis Center Uganda's school, Magooli Children's Education Center - Namayingo (MCEC) has transformed the lives of the children tremendously. GlobalGiving has been a huge resource to us since the partner application process. Since this project began, the revenue generated by the GlobalGiving Campaign allowed us to pay our teachers while they were unable to officially work due to COVID-19, as well as purchase vital supplies and materials that we have had to previously reprioritize during the pandemic. This project has supplied the school with cabinets to store work, and a printer and ink to print out teachers' lessons; as this allowed the teachers to travel with lessons for each child and provide homeschooling.
CCCU is coming up on our sixth birthday in October of 2023! Since our formation, we have been able to construct a kitchen and a cafeteria with working stoves, a sustainable chicken farm, sustainable fruit tree farms, hosted several educational volunteers, provided our children with shoes and clothes, and hosted our first ever graduation ceremony. Our most recent update has consisted of constructing seveal new additions to our education center with help from our friends at Terra Tech and the Reiner Meutsch Foundation Fly and Help! These additions have included three new classrooms, teacher's quareters, and new sanitary facilities. These additions have allowed us to expland our school to now accomodate children up the age of 18! The Magooli Children's Education Center is a model school in the district, and our children continue to excel in and outside of the classroom!
Most recently, we are facing the challenge of finishing construction of a fence around the parameters of the education center. This fence is vital for the safety and sustainability of our school, in order to protect our children from intruders, and our school supplies and farms from theives. About $3,000 remains before we can finish this construction.
As we continue to grow, with more advancements comes more financial responsibility in regards to funding the academy's monthly expenses. As we grow, Child Crisis Center Uganda needs to financially support more children and more staff! We are eager to raise funds that will go towards sustaining the salaries of our school staff as well as securing bulk supplies of food for this upcoming term. For this reason, we are still hopeful that we will reach our goal through GlobalGiving, so that we may keep the school afloat, as our monthly budget has increased. Currently there are 336 children attending the Education Center along with eleven teachers, one cook and one nurse all on payroll. CCCU gives children a safe space close to home where they can receive individualized attention with the support of detailed and planned out curriculums. The Education Center is the heart of CCCU and we must keep it going!
