By Jomelyn Dariada | Community Development Officer

Thank you GG for my school supplies

Our valued GlobalGiving donors, just to give you a glimpse of the impact of typhoon Haiyan brought to victims, of lives and properties. On the record, typhoon Haiyan was the most intense tropical cyclone that hit the Philippines.  More than 5,500 people were reported to have perished and roughly 4 million homes were destroyed.  The overall agricultural losses were estimated at 240 million US Dollars.

After three years (Nov 8, 2013), the areas affected by typhoon Haiyan have considerably recovered from typhoon inflicted destructions.  Thanks to the efforts of the local government units, international NGOs (INGOs), and local NGOs in its own recovery initiatives for the victims.

On our part of Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc., the proponent of this project, we’d like to inform you that we have contributed very concrete efforts in helping the victims who have recovered from the severe impact of typhoon.  All these became possible because of the generous hearts from GlobalGiving donors.

Around 1,500 young children age 2-4 years old have enjoyed the benefits of the 7 day care centers CJFI constructed after typhoon Haiyan.  A day care center is a facility where the local young children are given a supervised mental and physical exercises to prepare them for a formal schooling.  An estimated of 300 children would be accommodated in these facilities every school period.

Ramel, a community leader of barangay Cabuynan is very grateful that a day care center facility was constructed in his community. “I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Children’s Joy and GlobalGivng for having my community a recipient of this project.  My barangay has many young children. Without this facility, we won’t be able to respond to their needs because our day care center was destroyed by the typhoon.  Thank you Children’s Joy and GlobalGiving”, a message of him in vernacular in one of the activities with day care children.

Asked about what was his most unforgettable experience about typhoon, he said he don’t want to remember it.  It does not help.  Barangay Cabuynan was one of the communities in Leyte province worst affected by the typhoon.  A day after the typhoon, all houses along the coastal section of the community were gone. Crops such as bananas looked like as if they were intentionally chopped off.  Coconut trees which are dominant in the community were ripped off with their leaves or their stems were cut off.  Today, families have recovered.  Houses are built away from shoreline for safety reason based on the regulation from the barangay LGU.

On the other hand, CJFI continue to provide the computer literacy activities for school students in areas affected by the impact of typhoon.  Thousands of public school students have benefited the project.  A grade schooler Cherivie was very happy after she took part in the computer learning made by CJFI as part the activities in this project.  It has been her wishes to learn computer long time ago.  Now her dream is fulfilled.  “Masayang-masayang ako dahil marunong na ako mag-computer, said Cherivie”. Her mother described her as very enthusiastic to participate of the computer lessons.  According to her mother, every Friday Cherivie would sleep early to prepare herself in every Saturday computer classes.

At the close of  year 2016, CJFI has completed the accreditation of the 7 day cares centers.  By the way what is this accreditation and why it is necessary?

The supervision and monitoring of day care centers is under the responsibility of the Department of Social Welfare and Development or DSWD.  It is an agency of the Philippine government tasked to implement social welfare programs and services. Accreditation is a process whereby a day care center facility is able to meet the basic requirements or standards in the operation of day care center.  It is also a requirement for government assistance particularly from DSWD.

A day care facility is designed to aid in the development of young children in the community through a supervised exercises done by a day care worker.  It is LGU (local government unit) lead endeavor and so funds would come from them.  But because of Haiyan impact, most of the LGUs were helpless in dealing to all the needs of the people.  That is why social welfare development advocates such local NGOs and INGOs came into the picture to help the victims.

So with the issuance of a certificate of accreditation, it assures that the day care facilities would be listed as priority to receive assistance from DSWD.  The certificate of accreditation is important not only to get support from DSWD, but including from other agencies that have programs for children.

CJFI considers this important step as strategy for sustainability.  It is a common reality that NGOs are not forever in the area that is why sustainability is very important. CJFI ensures that when it would finally leave the community for good, the sustainability measures are in-placed.

Our dear GlobalGiving donors, CJFI is committed to do more to Haiyan victims.  Through your generosity, we would be able to fulfill this commitment.  We do appeal to you to continue your support to this project through your donation no matter how small it is.  Our success is your success.  Our fulfilment is also your fulfilment.  The happiness of the people would always bring joy to us because we are one team with one purpose, to help the needy.

THANK YOU.
