The Agaseke basketmakers' cooperative recently went into the soap-making business, thanks to the generous support of one of our dedicated volunteers. The women started by making big blue bars of strong soap. In Rwanda, that soap is great for washing clothes, shoes... and even people. Once everyone started using soap, they discovered they could participate at the market without drawing stares.
They began to feel accepted by their neighbors, and better about their appearance, and themselves. It turns out that soap creates cleanliness, self-esteem and acceptance by others. So yes, not only does soap wash clothes, but also, it builds community!
