Exposure to books before age 5 is critical.
Experts say part of the reason that low-income children left behind academically is because their vocabularies are more limited. Research shows that low-income children who are not exposed to books before age 5 enter kindergarten on average with a 30-million-word deficit compared to their more affluent peers.
Because of generous donations from individuals like you, we are making strides in places like Detroit where we are partnering with the social services agency, Brilliant Detroit, to bring Raising A Reader to more than 100 children and their families.
Reading to children at birth is key to preparing them for future success, and we have more work to do if we want to bring Raising A Reader to more communities in 2018. Thank you for your continued commitment to early childhood literacy!
