Dear Friends of Atzin's Literacy Program,
We've painsakingly added up the numbers, checking them twice. Here are the 2018 stats for the Adult Literacy component of Atzin Community Education program. This program has two sections: 1. classes held for women and youth using INEA (National Institute for Adult Education) literacy materials; 2. home-based classes for women using Atzin's Literacy for Empowerment modules.
Tihueliske Women and Youth
The literacy classes were held in the afternoon, three times a week for 3.5 hours and were taught in 2018 by one educator. Atzin is the community center for INEA in Tlamacazapa. In 2018, 23 Tihueliske participants were registered by Atzin in INEA (7 women and 16 young men). Daily attendance throughout the year in this program increased. Interestingly, although we aimed this program at women, many male youth wanted to join in the classes held at the Atzin Centre, and the female participants agreed to allow this.
Pilot project: Literacy for empowerment: achievements of this pilot project in 2017-2018 were production of eight tested literacy modules that incorporated cross-cutting themes of human rights, gender equality and peace; short trainings of educators on the use of the modules; start-up of pilot project of home-based small group learning.
During 2018, Atzin introduced the new literacy modules as the main teaching/ learning resource for women and tested a new strategy of home-based small group learning. Two groups, each with 4-5 participants (mostly family members) and an educator, met three afternoons per week for 2.5 hours, one group in one home.
Total number of participants (in two groups) 7
Breakdown by gender 6 females; 1 male
Number of classes until December 2018 97
Number of attendances 467
# of participants gaining literacy and numeracy by Dec. 2
In both sections, attendance was irregular towards the end of the year because of competing work and household demands on the participants, and because some women became discouraged with their slow progress. The strategy of holding classes in a family home as well as in the Atzin Centre was well received. Adjustments in 2019 included: each participant issued a module to take home with exercises to complete; the modules will be used in both the Atzin Centre (which in 2018 only used INEA material) and in two home groups
A complete report on all Atzin programs - by the numbers - is available on the Atzin website. To have a look, go to www.atzin.org. Kindly remember that this report is only "by the numbers," basically counting attendance and classes. The other factors such as quality of educator time and attention, training and supervision of educators, perceptions of learners with subsequent program adjustments, administration and accounting are all just as important, can be really time-consuming and are not reflected with just numbers.
As always, we are grateful for your ongoing support - only with that generosity can we make everything happen!
Sincerely,
Susan
