Hello LightSail backers,

There has been great excitement at Planetary Society HQ as word goes around that SpaceX's Falcon Heavy may have its test launch at the end of this month! Things are moving along at the Kenned Space Center's launch pad 39A - a scheduled static firing of the Falcon Heavy engines has already slipped twice, but may yet happen this week.  You can see updates in real time here  and keep up with information about the coming test launch as it's posted.

With a successful test launch behind them, SpaceX will take the next steps toward the mission that will send LightSail 2  on our first controlled solar sail flight in Earth orbit. If you have not seen it, you can watch this very cool animation from our website, detailing piece by piece construction of the LightSail 2 spacecraft as well as its manuevers in space.

As we get closer to the actual launch date, we'll be sending all of our Global Giving donors a message asking if you'd like to sign up for email updates from The Planetary Society, as we eventually will bring this fundraising campaign to a close.  We want to thank you for your contributions and your interest in this amazing project.  You have truly made LightSail a citizen-funded spacecraft, creating a model not only for flight by light but paving the way for an entirely new type of space propulsion that will empower us to learn more about the cosmos and our place within it.  You are changing the world.

As our CEO Bill Nye would say, "Onward!".

Thank you,

Robin Young, Donor Relations Manager
