The distribution of lifesaving clean birth kits is a component of the major project called "The Comprehensive Lifesaving Intervention" which also includes other components such as;
1. Facility support; In this component, we deploy skilled volunteers to local health facilities to provide direct service such as immunization, outpatient consultation and conducting of ANC services. This is aimed at reducing manpower gaps that exist in the project area. In the past 3 months since this pilot started, our volunteers have committed over 300 hours of volunteer time to 3 facilities serving Bolari, Doruwa and Gabukka communities in Gombe. We have immunized and dewormed over 3000 children and currently monitoring over 200 pregnant women keeping appointment with the above mentioned clinics.
2. Distribution of essential prenatal supplement; Under this component, we supply the facilities with essential prenatal supplement for pregnant women and children below 5. So far we have distributed over 1000 doses of prenatal supplement to pregnant women enrolled for ANC in those facilities. We preparing to supply antimalarial drugs and insecticide treated nets in January 2019.
3. Training health workers on basic lifesaving skills; This component has to do with training of health workers on basic delivery skills and how to use the birth kits. The training is scheduled to take place in February.
4. Distribution of 300 clean birth kits; This is the main component in which this fundraiser was all about. Even though we are yet to received disbursement for all funds raised for this purpose we have procured some few basic items for the packaging and distribution of the lifesaving kits. The volunteers who are to handle the distribution have already been inducted. Due to limited funds we are anticipating to distribute it in phases as we continue to raise more funds. In Phase we plan to distribute 100 pieces which means we need about $3000 even though we have raised $1100.
I was assured that our disbursement is scheduled for December 24 2018, which means our phase distribution will probably happen in January 2019.
