Despite a challenging year, here in the Build Maya Program at Enabling Leadership, 260 students continued their journey learning life skills across Bengaluru, Pune and the village of Dharwad.
It evoked a renewed sense of creativity, innovation and the motivation to rise to the challenge and problem-solve in the spirit of Rebuilding Together.
In the small village of Timmapur, Dharwad, our young team of Build Maya students took action in their own hands, aiming to find a solution that farmers in the Timmapur community had been struggling with for a while. The students highlighted some issues they observed in the community through their sessions and wanted to find solutions through intelligent, relevant and workable designs.
The group noted the extensive growth of weeds in the farm area. Kaveri’s father, Yallapa, a farmer, informed them of his difficulties and hired up to four more persons to clear the weeds. An expensive undertaking for most farmers in the village.
With the well practised Build Maya skills and tools- the Lego blocks- the group cracked their first step: a prototype for a de-weeder that would involve limited manual action and more de-weeding. Their next step was to identify how to build this prototype into a functional model for the farmers. Together with their teacher, the children found a lot of bicycles scrapped and not in use. The students found the much-needed component for their prototype. Working together with the local welder, the students successfully created the de-weeder machine for their community's farmers.
With four of these models created, the students have contributed them to the community of farmers in Timmapur. The farmers who have adopted this self-use eco-friendly method now stand to save time and money- while keeping the weeds out from their precious farms. What was once an expensive undertaking has now found a solution in the innovation of young minds.
