Dear Friends,
Greetings from Vacha. This year India celebrated 70 years of independence from the British on August 15th. This was a special landmark. Our girls from all the centers observe this day with celebrating the spirit of freedom and speaking of rights of citizens.
The young girls in oldest groups brought out their 17th edition of newsletters in their respective communities. Some had joined our project later and they are a bit behind. Girls have written articles on issues in their community and society in general, they have written about GST and its implications for them and their families, discrimination against girls.
Girls also took out rallies and performed dances and street plays on this occasion. This year Gokulashtami, a major festival by our lunar calendar fell on August 15. On this day human pyramids are formed to break a pot of curds and milk to celebrate the life of Krishna. It is a very masculine festival that is very politicized. We were somewhat worried about releasing newsletters and having public events fearing nobody will come for our event due to the grandeur of the other event. But we were pleasantly surprised to see the support of community and the audience we received for our events.
Once again we thank all of our donors whose support has added to our enthusiasm for mainstreaming girls’ issues and making them visible and effective in their communities.
