Final school exams in March and April are a busy and somewhat anxious time for students. Only, some of them have to go through a much harder struggle to just stay in school.
Sabiya is one such girl. Last year at around the same time, Sabiya was struggling to appear for her exams. Simply because her family did not want her to study further. They refused to let her study in grade Ten. Another problem was that they had sent her to her grandparents in distant suburbs, from where it was difficult for her to travel every day to school. She was losing heart and spoke to our facilitator to find a way out. Our facilitator mentored her and she firmly convinced her parents as well as school authorities to let her appear for the exam.
With very little time and absolutely no support at home she appeared for the exams and passed. One hurdle was crossed and she was ready for the next battle to enter high school. She received support from Vacha in completing online admission process to high school. After continuous negotiations at home, she is now ready to give her exams for class XI. We wish her the best in her efforts. She also negotiates with her friends and others to complete her assignments and even does a part time job in a small clinic in her neighbourhood. The struggle is still on!!
She confidently participates in most of Vacha’s activities. She has performed in street theatre on issues concerning community based toilets in front of State Functionaries.
To support a girl like Sabiya, GlobalGiving UK has launched a ‘We Believe in Girls’ campaign starting from March 7th and ends on March 14th. Wherein, they will be matching 50% of each donation to the project. It is our pleasure to inform you that through your continuous support and contribution, our project Providing life skills trainings to 300 girls living in Slums has been selected for this campaign.
