In Chad, women and young girls are taking important steps towards greater independence and protection from gender-based violence. One recent example comes from the Chadian Blue Cross, which organised a second wave of training for young girls and women on the transformation of local products.
The training was supported by Ms Abigail Marty from International Blue Cross and brought together around forty women and young girls. Under the supervision of Ms Beugoussou Walang Angeline, gender officer of the Chadian Blue Cross, participants learned practical techniques for processing fresh tomatoes into tomato purée, sauce, concentrate and juice.
This activity may appear simple at first glance, but its impact is much deeper. By learning how to transform local products, women gain practical skills that can help them generate income, strengthen their role in the household and participate more actively in the economic life of their communities.
For the Chadian Blue Cross, women’s empowerment is also an important tool in the prevention of gender-based violence. Economic dependence often increases vulnerability. When women have skills, confidence and opportunities to contribute financially, they are better equipped to make decisions, protect themselves and support others.
The atmosphere during the training was full of energy, dignity and joy. The participants were not only learning a technical skill; they were also experiencing solidarity, encouragement and a shared vision for a safer and healthier future.
International Blue Cross is encouraged by this approach because it combines prevention, empowerment and local sustainability. Instead of focusing only on risks and vulnerabilities, the programme strengthens the capacities that already exist within the community.
Each woman counts. Each new skill can become a step towards independence. And each empowered woman contributes to the wider protection and development of her community.
