Peer educators as role models for young people

By Anna Schwaller | Project Assistant

Peer educators are trained regularly in Chad. They serve as potential role models for their peers and are mainly responsible for the after school life skills clubs. These life skill clubs are “training” space where the youth can practice their life skills, debate, prepare theatres, songs, dances, do sport activities and live in a healthy and positive environment. It keeps the children and youth off the streets and away from alcohol and other drugs after the school.

Gender equality and gender-based violence (GBV) have become an integrative part of all peer educators training camps. In Chad, many female peer educators attend training days focusing on gender equality and GBV. Female role models are invited to encourage the girls to believe in themselves and to speak up against violence. The facilitators report that the girls learn to freely express their feelings through slams, poems, songs and dances. This is a powerful experience for many girls.

Larissa from Chad tells us our story: “I was a shy and reserved girl, thanks to the training I was able to fight this and now I express myself in front of others, I share my problems and even sexual ones to get more advice and guidance to better manage my life and review some of my sexual behaviours. I have been able to share with my parents and this has allowed me to live in peace at home.”

Thank you for supporting this important project in Chad! Without your donation, we wouldn't be able to continue our work. Thank you so much!
