Holding Tiny Lives in Caring Hands: Al-Mustafa NICU

By Sarah Ahmed | Project Leader

During the last quarter, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Al-Mustafa Hospital continued to provide essential, round-the-clock care to newborns requiring specialized medical attention. The unit played a critical role in stabilizing high-risk infants, particularly premature and low-birthweight babies, ensuring timely intervention and safe recoveries.

Birth & Risk Profile Data:
Monthly Births at Al-Mustafa Hospital
  • November 2025: 105
  • December 2025: 119
  • January 2026: 72
  • February 2026: 73
  • Total: 369
High-Risk Birth Indicators
  • Category: Premature births
  • Total Cases: 9
  • Category: Low-birthweight babies
  • Total Cases: 9

These cases required close monitoring and, where necessary, escalation to NICU care for stabilization and treatment.

NICU Admissions & Care Delivery:
Monthly NICU Admissions
  • November 2025: 27
  • December 2025: 35
  • January 2026: 28
  • February 2026: 25
  • Total: 115

The steady volume of admissions reflects both the community’s reliance on AlMustafa Hospital and the increasing need for neonatal intensive care services.

Exceptional Case Summary

Patient: Baby B/O Aqsa
Age at Admission: 24 days
Diagnosis: Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS)

The infant was admitted in a critical condition and required immediate intubation. Following intensive NICU management, the baby was successfully extubated within 24 hours. At discharge, the infant was stable, active, and feeding well.

The family—belonging to a lower-middle-income household—expressed profound gratitude for the NICU team's rapid and effective response. The child was their only son, born after five years, making the successful outcome especially significant to the family.
