In the last 3 months we have been busy with children needing a variety of surgeries.
We have provided operations to 15 children. Five were for major surgeries such as spina bifida repair and 10 were for minor surgeries such as incarcerated hernia. These hernias in small babies can cause blockage and be dangerous so timely intervention is essential. All of these children come from very poor families who would not have otherwise been able to afford the surgery.
One of the children we operated on was Chimamanda. She was born with spina bifida, which is a condition where the spine doesn't form properly. For Chimamanda the family noticed it shortly after birth, but as they are very poor, and she seemed quite ok, they did not take her to the clinic. After about seven months her situation had deteriorated. The bifida opened, got infected and started draining. Chimamanda's parents took her to Gmelina Health Centre operated by AMURT. AMURT made the arrangements to take her to University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH) in Enugu, about one and half hour away by road. There she had the procedure for repairing and closing the spina bifida. Chimamanda was on admission at UNTH for just over two weeks. The procedure was successful, and she is now home.
Please see more details of the individual children in the Powerpoint presentation attached.
