Life-Saving Spinal Surgery

By Nalubwa Leirah | Project Leader

Dear Donors

1. Executive Summary

This project seeks to support an individual living with a severe spinal injury sustained in a quarry accident. The injury occurred when a heavy stone fell on the person's back, resulting in spinal cord damage and paralysis of the legs.

The individual previously underwent surgery at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where metal implants were inserted to address the spinal injury. Further medical intervention has been needed, but the additional surgery had not yet been completed according to the latest information provided to the project team.

The individual continues to face serious health challenges and requires appropriate medical assessment and treatment. Financial assistance remains important to help address the medical needs associated with this complex injury.

2. Background and Need

Severe spinal injuries can affect mobility, independence, daily activities, and a person's ability to earn a living. They may also require continuing medical care, rehabilitation, and specialized treatment.

In this case, the injury resulted in paralysis of the legs following damage to the spinal cord. The individual has also experienced concerning deterioration of tissue around the injured area, as reported by the project team.

These circumstances highlight the need for timely medical assessment and appropriate specialist care. The exact diagnosis, treatment plan, and urgency of any further surgery must be determined by qualified medical professionals.

3. Project Objectives

The project aims to:

- Mobilize financial support for the individual's necessary medical treatment.

- Assist with approved costs associated with specialist assessment, surgery, and related care.

- Help address financial barriers to accessing appropriate treatment.

- Provide accurate updates to donors on the individual's condition and treatment progress.

- Maintain transparent records of donations and medical-related expenditure.

4. Progress to Date

The individual previously received spinal surgery at Mulago National Referral Hospital, during which metal implants were inserted.

The project subsequently sought additional funding for further medical intervention, including the removal of the metal implants where medically appropriate.

According to the latest update provided to the organization, the additional surgery had not yet taken place. The individual continued to experience paralysis of the legs and significant concern about the condition of the injured area.

The next report should confirm the latest medical assessment, the current treatment plan, the estimated cost of treatment, and any changes in the individual's condition.

5. Current Challenges

The main challenges are:

- The need to secure sufficient funding for the approved medical treatment.

- The complexity of the spinal injury and the need for specialist care.

- Continuing mobility limitations and the associated need for support.

- The uncertainty surrounding the timing of further surgery until the medical team confirms the treatment plan.

6. Human Impact

Beyond the medical condition itself, severe spinal injuries can place considerable emotional, physical, and financial pressure on an individual and their family.

The project seeks to offer practical support and hope by mobilizing resources for appropriate care. All communication about the individual's condition should respect their dignity, confidentiality, and privacy.

7. Financial Accountability

The project previously had a fundraising request of $19,650. The total amount received, local contributions, expenditure, and remaining balance should be reported using verified financial records.

The organization will maintain available donation records, receipts, hospital estimates, invoices, and evidence of payments. Funds should be used in accordance with the approved project purpose.

8. Next Steps

The project team will:

1. Obtain an updated medical assessment and treatment plan.

2. Confirm the estimated cost and timing of any recommended procedure.

3. Continue appropriate fundraising and communication with donors.

4. Maintain financial records for all project-related transactions.

5. Provide donors with factual updates when there are significant developments.

6. Respect the individual's privacy in reports and public appeals.

9. Conclusion

The spinal surgery project addresses a serious medical need involving a person living with a severe spinal injury and paralysis.

Further support may help overcome financial barriers to appropriate treatment. The organization remains committed to communicating responsibly with donors and providing updates supported by medical and financial documentation.

We sincerely appreciate the generosity of supporters who have contributed to this effort and those who continue to consider assistance.
